Leaf Lookers Forecast in the High South

All major forecasters are saying the peak leaf season in Western North Carolina will peak between October 19 and Nov 2 2019. Either side of these dates look to be a build up and then tailing off and cool weather in the area.

Warm and dry September has everyone guessing a bit - but at the end of the day, The High South is the place to be anytime!!!!

Foggy Mountain and Fall in The High South

Hiking in The High South! #1 Hike

Whiteside Mountain

The trail takes you on a hike to 4,940 ft. elev. along the eastern Continental Divide, which offers spectacular views from a high ridge top, 2,100' above the valley floor. Whiteside Mt. has the highest sheer cliffs in the Eastern US.
Length: 2 mi. loop.
Rating:Easy to moderate
Trail Head:
Whiteside Mt. parking area.

Geology of Gorges
Join Ranger Coburn, to learn about how we go mountains, and why they are still here. Also talk about how geology plays a role in other features like ecology and of course why this area has so many waterfalls. We will start in the visitor center then walk outside to view the escarpment. 

If your ready, bring some good hiking shoes and explore Gorges after the class

Blood Super Moon over The High South!

A total lunar eclipse occurred all over North and South America between the evening of Sunday, January 20 and the early morning hours of Monday, January 21. This image was taken about 11:58PM, Sunday.

As this supermoon was also a wolf moon (the first full moon in a calendar year), it was referred to as a "super blood wolf moon" due to the red color of the Moon - caused by sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere.

Warm Weather = Get Outside = Waterfall Hikes

With heavy rainfall over the past two weeks, area waterfalls are thunderous with an amazing display of power!

Dry Falls is one of the easiest waterfalls to reach and walk behind!!

Dry Falls flows on the Cullasaja River through the Nantahala National Forest. It is part of a series of waterfalls on an 8.7-mile stretch of the river that eventually ends with Cullasaja Falls. Dry Falls flows over an overhanging bluff that allows visitors to walk up under the falls and remain relatively dry when the waterflow is low, hence its name. Visitors will get wet if the waterflow is high.

Dry Falls is located on the side of U.S. Highway 64 3.1 miles north of Highlands, North Carolina. There is a parking area on the side of the road, where visitors can park before walking the short path with stairs to the falls. (wikipedia)
